What Are RCDs and Why Should Every Perth Home Have Them?

RCDs — also known as electrical safety switches — are life-saving devices that instantly shut off the power if they detect electricity flowing through an unintended path, like a faulty appliance or even a person.

This happens in as little as 30 milliseconds, which can mean the difference between a minor shock and a fatal incident.

Whether it’s your kids, pets, or guests at home — having properly functioning RCDs installed is one of the most effective ways to prevent electric shocks and electrical fires.

Where Can You Find RCDs in Your Home?

Most RCDs are located in your switchboard (meter box). They’re usually marked with a “Test” or “T” button. If you’ve never checked yours before, we recommend doing a quick visual check now. If your switchboard looks old, cluttered, or unfamiliar — it might be time for a professional review.

Do You Have Enough RCD Protection?

Not all homes in Perth are fully protected — and many older switchboards were built before modern safety regulations came into effect. That means:

• You might not have the required number of RCDs

• Your RCDs could be outdated or faulty

• Some circuits (especially lighting) may not be protected at all
